Maria seems more full of self-will, but she definitely is in someone's good graces to not have more consequences for her actions (especially her illegal ones -SPOILER - I have a hard time buying her release by customs AND being rewarded for "stealing" the drugs by getting paid by the pick-up guys - END SPOILER).
Maybe that's the point? Worked really well as a snapshot of life in rural South America for its first half, and Moreno's performance is impressive.
