Review of Maria Full of Grace (2004) by Joseph P — 08 Aug 2011
Low key ; an almost documentary feeling abounds, and the sense of life lived in this movie seems to be really quite genuine in comparison with most other movies. Not really a political statement, or a morality tale,in a strange way it's kind of a coming of age story about a beautiful, poor young woman who is stuck in a situation, and in a place (Columbia) in which the only options available to her to make her way in the world are rather grim and unrewarding.
Namely, menial jobs at menial wages. So, when a somewhat unsavory, dangerous, but more lucrative offer is dangled before her, she makes the rather questionable decision to take that chance. Its a simple story, and its told in a simple, haunting way.
It's the kind of movie that will stay with you for a while. One of the best movies I've seen in a long while!
