Review of Maria Full of Grace (2004) by Mark Z — 08 Aug 2008
An independent-minded young Colombian woman learns she is pregnant, and through a combination of boldness and naivete she risks everything for the chance of a better life. The film portrays the socioeconomic factors that motivate many young Colombian women to take extreme risks, like becoming a drug "mule", all in the name of economic opportunity.
Prepare to sit in bug-eyed amazement at the appalling low regard drug traffickers display toward women like Maria. Just as this film is a story of degradation, it is also the tale of a strong-willed individual determined to overcome all odds.
