Review of Margin Call (2011) by Alan S — 24 Mar 2012
In an era where it is often times so easy and simplistic to paint good and bad in clear black and white, it is refreshing to see a film attempt to give the innumerable shades of grey that make up our human existence. A stellar cast with leading lights including Spacey and Irons, with solid support from up and comers including Paul Bettany and Zachary Quinto, give us a fascintating study into the human psyche of an incredibly complex breakdown of the economic system.
Whilst the similarly (rightly) acclaimed 'Inside Job' gives an understanding of the systematic corruption that exists, and (rightly) points fingers at those involved, 'Margin Call' instead seeks to understand the fragility of the human psyche. Almost in a similar way to the Milgram Experiments, it will be looked back on in years to come, to understand how decent people can become corrupted.
