Review of Maps to the Stars (2014) by Patty C — 05 Mar 2015
Not as witty, entertaining, narratively interesting and dead-on a Hollywood satire as Altman's The Player, but that's okay, because it's Cronenberg's nightmare and you know how that goes! Besides, Hollywood deserves every ounce of his venom (and by extension, every phony-balony self-worshipping aspect of modern culture.
) The tone was matter-of-fact, super real, a bit deadened, and even pretty at times. The camera just observed, letting the characters' actions condemn them. It just said, Here, look. I am always interested in seeing a good director's bad dream so I'd recommend it for that alone.
And the performaces are great. Moore's Havana was scarier than Goldblum's Fly. And Mia Wasikowska's Agatha was heartbreaking. If people had just been human with her from the get-go, everything might have turned out okay.
