Review of Mao’s Last Dancer (2009) by Liss G — 03 Nov 2009
I haven't actually read the book but I can almost guarantee that the movie version of Mao's Last Dancer isn't as good as the book! It didn't blow me away with inspiration as I'd hoped it would. The story of Li Cunxin the young Chinese boy who becomes one of the world's best dancers has hints of Slumdog Millionaire in the way it shifts from his childhood and family's life in poverty to his famous career. What's missing though is some of the detail and the development of relationships, particularly his first and then second wife.
By all means I'd still say go and see it, if you don't have built up expectations from friends who've raved about the book you'll probably enjoy it. Just don't expect to be giving a standing ovation at the end.
And for the Australians - watch out for cameos from Deni Hines and Jack Thompson - bit random!!
