Review of Mao’s Last Dancer (2009) by Michael N — 17 Apr 2010
... feel like I ought to add a disclaimer to my rating (4/5): I'm not looking at this to critique the finesse of the film and its direction etc. This is a feel-good movie and it does that very well. Well-paced story-development, mostly chronological. Fair introduction of characters. Heartwarming. I enjoyed the film.
Hmmm... but really, Chi Cao's acting is rather dead-panned and has limited dimensions. Little plot intrigue (and definitely limited artistry). Little depth of characters too. But I guess, most biopic films share the same characteristics, and at least I enjoyed this!
Oh, very cliche final scene with Li Cunxin & Mary dancing and raising their arms into the air with a high-flying Chinese flag in the background *cringe*.
