Review of Mao’s Last Dancer (2009) by Trent R — 13 May 2010
Beresford does sort of a Powell & Pressburger lite bio adaptation here, but with a deft mix of time and place, performance and politics. The Chinese cast and Bruce Greenwood are excellent, and we get a nice Jack Thompson cameo to boot.
Greenwood is cast against type, and actually sells some pretty risky dialogue - like a scene explaining the significance of a t-shirt slogan. The dance that culminates and reprises all of the drama is also superb.
