Review of Mao’s Last Dancer (2009) by Matthew E — 03 Jul 2010
The filming of the ballet dancer Li Cunxin's autobiography including when he defects from China in the 80's after becoming a star in the Houston dance scene. Some superb performances by Chi Chao if you're into ballet.
Favorite scene: the excerpt from the "Rites of Spring" at the end (set to my all-time favorite orchestral pieces by Igor Stravinski). I just miss giving it five stars because I felt it was a directed at times a bit mechanically and I wanted to get more into the heart of Li's motivations.
