Review of Mao’s Last Dancer (2009) by William L — 03 Jun 2011
Interesting true story of Li Cunxin, a Chinese boy picked from poverty to study ballet by the Chinese government in the early 70s and his rise to international fame as a world-class ballet dancer. Film is most interesting for the story and less for the dancing.
The choreography and dancing are fine but filmed in such a bland, uninspiring way that it's hard to appreciate it. (After "Black Swan" you really need to up your game to make ballet exciting on screen.
).
