Review of Maniac Cop (1988) by Mark D — 21 Feb 2010
A rogue cop is offing the citizens of New York and the finger is pointing firmly at Bruce Campbell (off of Evil Dead), one of New York's finest who comes complete with a dysfunctional marriage and unexplained nights away from home.
Typical 80s video fare this low budget flick marries horror and police thriller and manages to be entertaining if not exactly ground breaking. The plot-line is, of course, paper thin but some of the set pieces work well, particularly when the cop of the title works his way through an entire police station to get at the main protagonists. Campbell is reasonable but the rest of the cast are as wooden as you'd expect in this kind of fayre. The deaths are not particularly gruesome or violent and as it progresses it errs more on the side of police action movie than out and out horror.
Oscar material this isn't but as an enjoyable post-pub flick you could do a lot worse.
