Review of Maniac (1980) by Andrew D — 03 Feb 2009
Not your run-of-the-mill slasher. It's told through the eyes of the serial killer, who is deeply disturbed, tortured, and mentally ill. Joe Spinell almost manages to drum up sympathy. He's not glamorized - he's repulsive. Some of the violence is disturbing, some of it fake-looking. The score and sound editing/dubbing are awful, and apart from the lead, the acting is embarrassing. What elevates this is the psychological aspect and attempt to delve into this man's twisted psyche, instead of being a mindless slasher.
