Review of Maniac (1980) by Senor C — 08 Apr 2011
Any movie that Roger Ebert walks out on you would figure I would really like but Im sorta lukewarm about Maniac (both times Ive seen it). Really a show case for Tom Savini's bloody handy work & the notorious exploding head is impressive (love that fact that it was done w/ no permits & Savini fired a shotgun through a car windshield & the crew basically ran away before the cops showed up).
Spinell is slimy good but the script isn't fleshed out enough for this to live up to it classic status that many have tagged it as. He does put you @ unease though as he kills & scalps his female victims for his mannequin collection.
Liked the low budget feel (made for only $350 000) & the New York locations. Loved the fact that porn star Sharon Mitchell had a cameo. I hadn't seen her since I watched the XXX classic A Taste of Money when I was a teenager.
