Review of Manhunter (1986) by Berni E — 25 Mar 2010
Manhunter is the best of all the Hannibal Lector films. It moves at an easy pace, and is filmed in a style that only Micheal Mann can get away with. The light is ambient, and darkness seems to be seeping in from everywhere.
William Peterson plays the lead role with a confidence that makes everything he does believable. However it is Brian Cox that steals the show as the sinister Hannibal Lector. Here is a man that is evil incarnate.
He has no sympathy, no remorse, and is ruthlessly smart. Peterson is on the tail of a serial killer named the Tooth Fairy, and requires Lector's help to catch him. This film is essentially a thriller wrapped in horror clothing, which is a good thing.
Its clever, and disturbing, and leaves you feeling cold and alone. I wouldn't have it any other way.
