Review of Manhunter (1986) by Scott R — 23 Feb 2018
One of the most evocative and visually stunning/unsettling films from the 80s, featuring hypnotic lighting and soundtrack choices which must have seems off-putting/revolutionary at the time, yet now are seen as staples of Mann's filmography.
The acting is top notch from all (particularly a deeply emotional and unhinged performance from Peterson in the lead). Far from being dated, the more it ages the more the style seems fresh and original.
Also includes probably the best psychological analysis and forensic investigations ever committed to film. In short, arguably even better than The Silence of the Lambs, and probably the most underrated and, unfortunately, oft-forgotten film ever made.
A directing and acting masterclass. Well worth the watch.
