Review of Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993) by Chris E — 10 Feb 2010
In one of Woody Allen's biggest critical successes, Manhattan Murder Mystery is a detective film like no other. Keaton and Allen play a middle aged couple, who after their elderly neighbor dies, investigates what they seem is a mysterious occurance. What makes this classy comedy film work is the way the clues almost throw themselves at the amateur detectives, and how they both (especially Keaton) become obsessed with the possibility that their mundane and stamp collection older neighbour could be a murderer.
With a stellar supporting cast with includes M*A*S*H legend Alan Alda and screen icon Angelica Huston; the duo also bring a sense of class to the film with their humourous views on the mystery. Overall, Woody Allen succeeds by using a captivating murder mystery script and injecting gallons of laughs, one liners and hilarious observations.
