Review of Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993) by Geoffrey T — 11 Apr 2012
This is minor Woody Allen, and by that I mean it doesn't have that strand of "THIS IS A GREAT FILM" running through it at all times, but it's not meant to be. For a guy whose made one film a year since the early 70s, it's good to have lighter films side by side with darker or artistic explorations.
I've focused mostly on the latter so far, just because that's my preference. But after this film, I look forward to all the comedies and lighter Allen films that I haven't checked out yet.
There's something innocent and joyful about this one. The mystery element puts the characters in desperate and dangerous situations, but it never leaves the confines of an enjoyable and light tone.
I'm sure on some level it's a homage to films that Allen loves as well, but mostly it's a very funny and likeable movie.
