Review of Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993) by Richard C — 01 Aug 2012
Woody Allen's love-letter to film noir is a funny, well-constructed and highly entertaining comedy that never goes over the top and only becomes more intriguing along each passing sequence. Filled with typically enjoyable all-round performances you'd expect from an Allen film, the film not only features a bravura reference to the timeless mirror sequence from Welles's The Lady from Shanghai, but also contains one of the funniest scenes Allen has ever directed in which the lead characters desperately try to trick the killer by using a soundboard only for the plan to not go down as easy as it could be.
Love him or hate him, Woody Allen is probably the world's leading comedy director and this film is yet another example of that theory being proven.
