Review of Manhattan (1979) by Rockmary M — 14 Jun 2009
Absolutely exquisite film. So good, my wife loved it and she doesn't even like Woody.
Certainly the most visually beautiful of Allen's films. The black and white views of the Manhattan skyline are perfectly married to the music of Gershwin.
Tried and tested Allen territory; paranoia, neoroses and lots of silly, and often pseudo intellectual, gags.
In terms of story, not his best, and certainly not his funniest, but it deserves top rating just for the visuals. And of course, Diane Keaton.
Only one fly in the ointment, which is partly hindsight. Given the controversy over Allen's realtionship with Mia Farrow's daughter the on-screnn relationship here makes slightly uncomfortable viewing.
Nonetheless a must see for any fan of NYC!
