Review of Manhattan (1979) by Gina D — 01 Jul 2009
Woody Allen and I don't always agree. I will agree with him on this: he says in the beginning of Manhattan that said town should always be filmed in black and white and always be scored by George Gershwin. What a romantic way to film his favorite city. However, I wouldn't agree with him when he says that this is his least favorite work. Unless I'm remembering wrong, I've never really loved any of his movies. Annie Hall was all right, and one I should probably see again. Otherwise?
Woody Allen movies I've seen: Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, Hollywood Ending, Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
Oops. Didn't realize it would be so few. He's so prolific and his movies tend to all feel the same -- how is anybody supposed to keep track!? Well, this is heartfelt and lovely, and well-acted all around. My argument about Woody Allen is that he's the same in every movie and everyone IN his movies plays versions of him ... not here as much. Very sweet.
So what other movies of his should I make a point to see?
