Review of Manhattan (1979) by Ken S — 11 Mar 2014
"Manhattan" is fantastic. I've only recently begun to see some of Allen's work, but this has got to be one of his best works (not that I have too much to go on from his decades-long career, having seen little).
The small cast is great, and the writing is smart and witty, as funny as it is dramatic, and it has beautiful black and white cinematography. This was Allen's first film in both black and white and in widescreen, and he nailed both.
The story has Allen as a middle aged man conflicted between his romance with a 17 year high school girl, and his best friend's mistress...and while the story is simple, it is well told, and it looks fantastic.
