Review of Manhattan (1979) by Sam B — 11 Mar 2013
The main character in Manhattan is not Woody Allen. It's the film's very setting. Here, in beautiful black and white, Woody captures the city of New York to examine themes of love and loss in beautifully detailed shot after shot.
An ordinary shot in this romantic classic would not only show our main characters speaking to one another. It would also show everything else going on in the location. There's not a single dose of rack focus in this, because Woody is trying to show us every beautiful detail he can to turn this city into a spectacular work of art.
