Review of Manhattan (1979) by Hannah M — 27 Feb 2010
An essential Allen film. Some terrific writing and some effective black and white cinematography really help separate this film. Unlike Annie Hall, Manhattan is linear and focused, and slightly more dramatic.
It's less a comedy and more of an exploration of relationships. The best part of the film by far are the montages set to the sound of George Gershwin. The opening with small segments of New york backed by Rhapsody in Blue is astonishingly beautiful.
It is a very well crafted film that effectively captures New York, its culture, and its relationships, all in one turn.
