The little known director Panos Cosmatos is doing something different in his second piece of work. A couple that lives in the woods is enjoying an isolated and cosy life. When some weird, creepy, hippie-like people come by and bring plenty of horror, the idyllic life is far gone.
This film looks incredible. The colors, the slow syrupy movement and the general cinematography is amazing. I dig the looks and the entire presentation with Jóhann Jóhannsson's, rest in piece, sweet music and a bunch of cinematic, cool effects. Throw in Nic Cage - the man that can be amazing or appaling, do blockbusters or far out stuff. This time he is OK, but nothing more. He get's a scene made for him, I guess, where he can rage and go mental. He plays the role of a man that's after revenge and that's really what's going on here after a sweet build up. It turns repitative and tries to take kills and fights to new hights - sure they are cool enough, but I feel bored - the very inspirational and great first half never hold up in this neonfilled, psychedelic revenge story.
It should have been shortened, it should have had a better script, it should have had an even better story, it should have looked exactly the same. That would have been an awesome film.
