Review of Mandy (2018) by Spencer S — 13 Sep 2018
"Mandy" is certainly one of the most bizarre film experiences you'll ever stumble across. The film is what happens when you take a revenge story and infuse it with hard psychedelic drugs as we get to watch a blood-soaked, maniacal Nicholas Cage go berserk on a bunch of cult freaks and demonic creatures from Hell.
The movie has remarkable aesthetics whether it's the intense neon lights that are in nearly every frame of this movie, the odd cartoon dream sequences, the uncanny 80's camera aesthetics, or the mind-melting cinematography.
It is important to note that the first 40 minutes or so progress at a snail's pace, but once Nicholas Cage gets angry, it becomes almost an entirely different film as things get progressively more uncomfortable and surreal.
The story is lacking but I'm willing to look past that given how much this film focuses on creating such an immersive, intense stylistic experience. i'd also like to note that although the movie clocks in at 2 hours, the time flew by quickly given how the movie puts you into an almost trance-like state because of how peculiar and unsettling it is.
