Review of Manderlay (2005) by Phyllis C — 29 May 2008
As in Dogville, loved the setting and fully understand the reason for Lars use of this. Love that dogma-style of filmaking! However, I almost didn't watch this 2nd installment because a donkey was actually killed simply for the sake of "art" (Lars - you are an asshole!)- and then the director removed that scene because of controversy which he didn't seem to understand at all.
Anyway, this episode doesn't come close to Dogville. Howard didn't fill the bill as lead and even Dafoe was flat. Plot kept me interested in spite of wishy-washy acting and lack of character-growth.
Can't wait for last of the trilogy.
