Review of Manderlay (2005) by Kevin H — 01 Jul 2008
There are the occassional ineptitudes (Howard can't manage a decent performance, at least with her clothes on), but really it might be the best examination a movie has made of an attempted communitarianism.
It never gets static or starts repeating itself--the themes and moral problems are constantly shifting rather than growing tired and preachy. I'd say it's about equal with Dogville, there being tradeoffs in multiple areas, but in both of them Von Trier knows how to write a damn good narration.
