Review of Manchester by the Sea (2016) by Jim B — 09 Feb 2017
Manchester by the Sea is a masterful drama by Kenneth Lonergan. The performances in this film are excellent. Casey Affleck is amazing in the lead role. He is very subtle but captivating. Lucas Hedges is great in his role.
Michelle Williams is barely in the film, but she was good in her part. Writer-director Kenneth Lonergan has crafted a complex drama about loss, the past, and human emotion. His ability to inject humor in this is amazing.
The story is heartbreaking and keeps you interested throughout its long runtime. The film revolves around Affleck's character. It really is about him, and he definitely delivers. I really liked his relationship with Hedge's character.
The dialogue surrounding this film just feels so real. It never feels like a movie. Overall, this is a brilliantly made and well acted film that is heartbreaking, captivating, and truly one of a kind.
It is best to go into this film knowing as little as possible. Let it take you on a depressing emotional roller coaster.
