Review of Manchester by the Sea (2016) by Jack S — 23 Feb 2017
Although the performances were well-acted, I don't think this movie is as good as it is hyped to be. I am not surprised that it was nominated for an Academy award. The requisites always seem to be focused on film length, suffering and difficult and sometimes controversial issues.
While talking difficult themes is part of what makes storytelling transcendent and can open up a dialogue about issues that are hard to talk about, I do t think that is enough to make a film great. Everyone has been talking about Afflek's performance.
It was a good performance but it seems that afflicted characters seem to garner the most attention. The range of these characters is somewhat limited. Overall, a film that in my mind will be one of those that is hard to sit through and no real reward for doing so.
