Review of Manchester by the Sea (2016) by Denislav U — 23 Feb 2017
Manchester By The Sea is the kind of movie that is slow as all hell and is targeted for a niche audience only. It's a dreary exploration of misery to the point where it becomes serene. There is no clear structure, instead it bombards you with the characters suffering almost constantly in one continues blob of acts.
It's main exploration topic is grief wich is delved into quite extensively, but unfortunately that does not hide how the story is nothing more than a placeholder. It doesn't really have an ending per say - it just reaches one admittedly depressing conclusion.
Although not for most it is worth it's Oscar nomination based alone on the brilliant performances and the fact that it does not treat its viewer like he is an imbecile who needs everything spelled out.
Manchester By The Sea is a stage that allows you to draw your own conclusions - something we need more of.
