Review of Manchester by the Sea (2016) by Anthony N — 26 Feb 2017
The movie is beautiful. It is slow, but it is a perfect example and meditation on the slow exertion of life. Casey Affleck is outstanding, while always being my favorite of the Afflecks, he has transcended my perception of his approach to the craft of acting in this performance. Although I wouldn't put this performance up against the turn around job of Matthew Mcconaughey, it is still quite stellar and phenomenal. While I do believe he has a little work to do in catching up with other award nominees, he separates himself from the pack with his somber approach to depression and fighting mental walls within himself.
Through out the film you feel the impact of how everyday implants its little tropes into how we become who we are, and how yesterday impacts us just as much as how today will impact us tomorrow. The struggle is insurmountable, and in that pain that the movie projects...it doesn't give you the tear jerk that you await, or the philosophical enlightenment you wish it to have. But in that is the beauty, the beauty of this film is that it is life, and if you view movies as an escape from that this isn't the film for you. I do believe that it will change your perception on how things are.
