Review of Manchester by the Sea (2016) by Corrie S — 05 May 2017
Stellar. Just stellar. I hadn't read much about the movie other than the top line, so I'm lucky to have experienced it fully. I've loved all of Lonergan's movies -- loved in a way where the movie stays with me for years. I saw "You Can Count on Me" more than five times. I waited for Margaret to finally make its way online (or anywhere). And now this one. To be honest, I didn't even realize it was a Lonergan film until the Oscars because all the hype was Affleck and Damon and Williams.
But this is a Lonergan film, completely. It's the everyday-ness of his stories, and of the people, that resonate and stay with you. We're immersed in their lives and it's like people you know.
With each of his films, though, he ratchets up the central tragedy. The first film's tragedy was a distant car crash that orphaned two young children. His second was...no spoilers. And now Manchester by the Sea. I honestly don't think if I can endure his next film if it takes tragedy to yet another level after this one.
P.s. awesome cameo from the well-known actor from You Can Count on Me. That guy does creepy unlike anyone else.
