Review of Manchester by the Sea (2016) by Gary P — 22 Jul 2017
In 2017 we saw quite a few overrated movies be nominated for and/or win Academy Awards. "Arrival" and "La La Land" are two such examples. You can add "Manchester by the Sea" to that list.
One of the most depressing movies I have ever seen. Just when I thought you could never get more miserable that the absolutely horrible "Beats of the Southern Wild", "Manchester by the Sea" comes along.
This movie in my opinion did not deserve either of the two Oscars it won. Casey Affleck played the type of character the Academy voters love which I believe is the reason he won. His acting here is not terrible by any means, but it is not Oscar caliber.
The same can be said for Kenneth Lonergan's lethargic and very predictable script. I sadly knew what the incident that turned Casey Affleck's character into an alcoholic loner was immediately.
I can't figure out why Affleck's character even married Michelle Williams' character. She is absolutely miserable every second she is on screen. What in the world did she see in her? The cast gives it their best shot which is why I have given this movie two stars.
However I am beginning to think I was a little too generous.
