I knew nothing about this film before I watched it. I didn't even realise that there was a Manchester in America.

At first the plot wasn't apparent and my other half said it was slow but we persevered taking the luxury of time to allow the story to unfold which it did through a series of flashbacks.

We were utterly drawn in.

Affleck was utterly convincing in playing an excruciatingly difficult role and he dominated the film, although the relationship he had with his nephew at times provided much needed relief from the overwhelming despair of his character.

The screenplay was sublime and I wasn't surprised to find out afterwards that not only did Afflleck get an oscar but so did the screenplay.

We uttered not a word on the sofa we were so absorbed by the flim and so moved.

I agree that this is a film that needs patience and probably the right frame of mind to really dial into but if you can then it will stay with you for a long time.

Everything about it was just so, and actually having seen Midnight last week, I personally think this film should have won best film and best director as well.
