Review of Man with a Movie Camera (1929) by Giffy G — 19 Jan 2008
Umm... not a clue. The editing was dazzling, even 80 years later, but the movie was incomprehensible. Vertov claimed he was trying to draw on a universal language of cinema... and I don't have any idea what he was trying to say.
If it had simple been art for art's sake, I might have like this movie a lot more... but it's preface claimed to have an agenda... and easily identifiable agenda, and that I did not find. Moreover, if this was art for art's sake (and the preface was misleading or should be ignored) it's not the best art I've ever seen.
It was more muddled and confusing than anything else.
