Review of Man with a Movie Camera (1929) by Marko K — 20 May 2008
This film reminds us all that cinema is foremost an art form and not a way to generate millions.
Man With the Movie Camera with its camera work, rapid fire editing and ways of connecting seemingly unrelated scenes together is ahead of its time even now, let alone back in 1929.
For anyone concerned about communist references, this is a documentary of Soviet Russia back in 1929. The film makes no judgments nor conclusions about the times, merely an observation and is a very valuable record of that age (and one that you rarely see about Russia anywhere, especially in the west).
If after 5 minutes you feel lost, give it another 5 and I'm sure you'll find yourself absorbed in the imagery and musical score, especially if you are watching the version scored by Cinematic Orchestra.
A fantastic film.
