Review of Man on a Tightrope (1953) by Tom M — 09 Jan 2011
The ending veers sharply toward the corny, but given the subject matter--a circus troupe escaping Communist Czechoslovakia--it's remarkable how long this movie avoids pure corn. Kazan is a masterful, economical storyteller, which helps a lot, and a brilliant director of actors to boot, so the uniformly solid performances here are unsurprising.
A good movie with some great scenes, best of which is the meeting between the leaders of the rival circuses. Kazan's shots at the suppression of creativity in the communist world are especially effective.
