Review of Man of the Year (1995) by Mike J — 20 Apr 2012
This is a movie that has no idea what it wants to be, because it switches between a few different directions and doesn't create a coherent movie. It fails to be a political satire or make political commentary, fails at being a romantic comedy, and fails at being a thriller.
The idea of an independent candidate winning the presidency would have been enough to make an interesting, engaging film. Instead, the film succumbs to not knowing what the hell it wants to do and ends up trying to do everything.
The result is a very confused and disappointing film that fails to engage. The film is also a cesspool of wasted talent. Lewis Black is a side-character that is given nothing to do. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are throw-away cameos that are also given nothing to do.
Christopher Walken plays a somewhat bigger role, but is nonetheless wasted in favor of Robin Williams stealing every scene. Laura Linney delivers probably her worst (and most boring) performance since Congo.
Robin Williams can be funny at times, but it's not enough to save this horribly uneven-paced mess of a movie.
