Review of Man of the West (1958) by Eric R — 10 Apr 2011
An ex-train robber has left it all behind to start a new life. While on a train, some robber's attempt to rob the train and in the chaos of it all, he is thrown from the train and left in the middle of nowhere.
A dance hall girl and gambler were also left behind and together they stumble across a cabin which happens to be occupied by the members of his own gang, who all of which aren't too happy to see him.
Man of the West is a beautifully shot film about an ex-train robber who is forced to help his old mates rob a bank against his will. The framing is superb with some awe-inducing wide shots. Gary Cooper does his thing as the character stuck between what is right and wrong, and the script really captures the feelings of this man.
Its a western that is clearly about this one man, and the choices that he is inevitable forced to take. The love interest in Julie London does a good job as well as Coopers character grows close to her as the film progresses.
