Review of Man of Steel (2013) by Gigi S — 05 Mar 2016
Having seen the original Superman and been mildly disapointed, I will say that this is the Superman movie I have always wanted to see. There have been many complaints about this movie: the movie has no real scenes of Superman saving people, the end had too many people die, this take on Superman is too dark, Superman is too powerful to have an interesting story around him, and why does Superman kill General Zod. I will address the complaints in my review.
1) This movie has no scenes of Superman saving people. While yes, it's not a cheese fest about Superman just flying around, finding people in trouble, and saving them,he saves plenty of people.
2) The end fight had too many people die.
The opposite is a problem with most Marvel movies, in my opinion. If hypothetically, there actually was a battle between super powered beings over the fate of the Earth in a major city, a lot of people would die. This also adds to the tension of the battle. We all know that Superman will save the world, but not everyone knows that who will survive in the end.
3) Superman is too powerful to build an interesting story around him.
I believe that this is the worst complaint about the movie. The tension of the battle is based on how much the protagonist compares to his competition, not how powerful the protagonist is. In this movie, General Zod and his soldiers are undeniably in a place of advantage.
4) Why does Superman kill General Zod?
This is something I will admit that the movie could have done better. I wish it had established Superman's no killing rule. But Superman had no choice but to kill Zod. It was either that or let more innocent people die. In my opinion he made the right choice.
Man of Steel is a great movie. It makes me excited for the future of the DC Universe.
