Review of Man of Steel (2013) by Esperanza S — 09 Jun 2016
The Titanic of superhero pictures. This is the biggest scope yet attempted in a superhero movie -- some superheroes are street vigilante justice style and I love that, but some are planetary and they pulled that off for the first time.
Thankfully it also breaks the superhero genre mold in two ways. 1) Non-linear time and 2) it's really SCI-FI even more than it is a superhero flick. I've waited my whole life for Superman to be done with sci-fi epicness and mind-blowing destruction.
Story: 8/10 The origin & the plot weave together seamlessly -- wow. The origin parts are meh cause I know the god damn origin already. Give me a good Superman movie.
Emotional Impact: 5/10 The dramatic moments failed to connect emotionally with me mostly, but other people seem to like that setup better than the action stuff. I just think the dramatic storytelling and acting was done better in the original Superman movie. Check that out if you want a dramatic origin.
Visuals: 9/10 Take the most rousing epic scene in the Dark Knight Trilogy - every scene is at least that visually exciting. A Superman movie should be like the highest amount of fx craziness ever and Zack Snyder pulled that off near miraculously.
But after a while the fx become tiresome. We have reached peak cgi, and peak Snyder. We must have good stories or at least some fun to entertain us. So this is not one that I find myself revisiting. Still, a good effort.
