Review of Man of Steel (2013) by Jay Z — 19 Feb 2017
Happily, Man of Steel brings a proper rebirth of the Superman we all know and love. Yes, it's true that Superman has never been THIS dark and depressing, but I think we should admire that Man of Steel actually has had the guts to actually embrace Superman's dark side. It's not like the movie is like this for no reason, it is accurately depicting what life would be like for an orphaned alien from outer space with extraordinary abilities. It explains why things are the way they are in a timely and subtle fashion.
The bottom line is that Man of Steel successfully tackles the famous character of Superman by giving him his own history, conflict, emotions, regrets, and relationships in one movie, which is all anyone could ask for.
And, of course, Man of Steel isn't perfect. At times it feels like, while watching the film, that the story becomes a little bit bloated and too full of ideas that cannot come to light before the movie finally comes to a conclusion. And, also, there is such an abundance of epic visuals of Superman taking flight and fighting bad guys that you can very possibly become numb and immune to them, never fully realizing the greatness of these scenes.
Overall, Man of Steel is a very well-crafted take on the origins of Superman but sometimes fails to contain its desire to please audiences with almost too much added information and numerous, stuffed in, unappreciated action sequences.
