Review of Man of Steel (2013) by Jack W — 29 May 2017
Man of Steel was fantastic in every way... except the most important ones: character development and story. The casting and acting are great, special effects: superb, aesthetically, it was gorgeous... but, while the story wasn't terrible by any means, it was a bit generic and the flow felt very inconsistent.
I think this was because Zack Snyder was trying to drive a Christopher Nolan vehicle... and Nolan drives the Tumbler from The Dark Knight franchise (a rather complex vehicle to control)... Snyder didn't wreck it.
.. but he certainly scratched the paint. Also, I felt myself not particularly emotionally invested in any of the characters because, well, there was no time to really get to know any of them. There were certainly emotionally poignant scenes in the movie.
.. but they were so sporadic and quick you didn't have time to really savor or let them take effect. Overall though, I did enjoy it; and Henry Cavill was perfectly fine as Superman. Good and fun, but not great.
