Review of Man of Steel (2013) by Peter F — 01 Jun 2017
The movie that many people (myself included) projected to be the next big step towards comic book films becoming recognized as art is pretty much a massive disappointment, and if there's anyone to blame it's Zack Snyder.
The film is commendable for how it tries to gel Superman into a post-Dark Knight world, but the film suffers from weak characterizations, and uneven story structure. The first-half of the movie is very forced, with plenty of flashback sequences that prove distracting, and the second-half feels like Michael Bay with more dramatic relish.
Snyder once again shows that he is a director that's capable of making great spectacles, but his sense for nuance and humanity is tawdry, with most of the film's artful leanings coming off as ham-fisted.
A real shame, as the film really did assemble a great cast, and there are plenty of good ideas here to have allowed for a truly transcendent take on a most iconic character. So there you go folks, another misfire of a Superman movie.
