Review of Man Bites Dog (1992) by Mark E — 18 Dec 2008
From the second scene you understand the tone of this satire. The main actor is magnetic, some may say charming, and you do become de-sensitised to the violence of his deeds. The playful mood is then broken by a far from comical scene when the documentarians join in with the killer.
At this point, the first real feeling of shock hit me and I wondered if it is possible to mix comedy/satire with visceral violence and cruelty. I'm not sure that it is because the contrast was too stark.
The comedy wasn't fun enough, and the violence was as serious as a cannonball in the face. Unsettling and original, but a little flawed. Have the directors done anything of note since?
