Review of Malena (2000) by Mohamed F — 07 Jun 2011
There seems to be some big symbolism at play in the character of Malèna herself, as in Malèna is Italy itself, especially if you pay attention to the backdrop of the movie and the transitions Italy takes along with Malèna, and the ending puts it all together with the return of the husband after losing his "right arm", now they're back in town and the town folks decided to accept them as if nothing ever happened.. it's just a theory!
I didn't like the movie much to be honest. the severe themes of eroticism were way too much, I have no idea why Tornatore decided to go with that over the top sexuality, it honestly robbed the movie of more depth that it could've achieved otherwise.
Cinematography was pretty nice, that nostalgic warm look, almost sepia toned, served the theme pretty nicely, but didn't like the obvious and sometimes inconvenient use of gradient 85 and 80a filters for exterior shots, it stood out badly in my opinion.
