Review of Make Way for Tomorrow (1937) by Adam C — 04 May 2010
If you're familiar with Leo McCarey, you might not suspect a film like this from him. Let me say that it is a thoughtful and well made film. The film is an examination of old age and how the elderly are tossed aside.
The film tells the story of an elderly couple who are force to split up because they have no money to live together anymore. The film follows them as they live with their ungrateful children and then in the second half the couple go out on the town together, for one last hurrah.
It is for sure a tearjerker, and I defy you not to get a little weepy during the film. The last third of the film is as bitter sweet as you can get. A mature and well crafted drama.
