Review of Make Way for Tomorrow (1937) by Maarrk H — 23 Nov 2010
Orson Welles once called 'Make Way For Tomorrow' "the saddest movie ever made -- It would make a stone cry," and that's absolutely true. There are very few other films tackling the idea of lifelong love, aging, and generational separation that hit quite so well.
The wet tissues around the foot of the sofa in my living room are proof enough of just how well Leo McCarey has gotten to me with this, his most forgotten (how? why?) film. If and when I get to teach this stuff, you can be sure this will be of my curriculum.
