Review of Make Way for Tomorrow (1937) by James H — 27 Dec 2010
Sad, sad, sad. An influence on Ozu's Tokyo Story and asks the question 'Are children morally responsible for their parents when they grow old?'. Leo Maccarey's humanist film is full of bittersweet moments when a husband and wife have to separate between their children because they can't afford their own home anymore.
More than a few tears were shed in the Clow household as mr and mrs cooper reviewed their lives and tried to come to terms with their future apart. Made in1937 just before social security and mixed-sex old folks homes were introduced to America, we see the cooper's happiest times spent together in a bustling Manhattan.
Beautiful and heart-warming.
