It's staggering to think this was made in Hollywood during the 30s. McCarey had to fight for his uncompromising ending which is simply flabbergasting. There are so many heartfelt and touching moments in this little film about old age.

A major influence on Japanese cinema, both Tokyo Story and Ikiru have borrowed from this brave movie. McCarey has a knack for getting natural performances out of his actors during a time where acting was very theatrical.

This is the kind of film Cassavetes would have made in the 30s. It's as heartbreaking and sad as movies get. Our two seniors are etched into my mind and I'll never forget them. This is such an important film for young adults to watch: Don't take your parents for granted.
